Södertörn University in south Stockholm is a dynamic institute of higher education with a unique profile and high academic standard. Critical and Cultural Theory is an interdisciplinary research environment and graduate school that focuses on a critically motivated study of cultural artifacts and practices. It awards PhD degrees in Aesthetics, Art History, Comparative Literature, Gender Studies, Media and Communication Studies, Philosophy, and the Theory of Practical Knowledge. Works of art, literary and philosophical texts, media technologies, and social and political practices are the focus of research. The researchers are united by the conviction that critically informed humanities are vital for the self-understanding and scrutiny needed to address the questions of the future in contemporary society. Through its close collaboration with the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) at Södertörn University, themes related to this geographical area constitute an important profile area. Comparative Literature has been offered as a degree subject at Södertörn University since 1999 and is part of the School of Culture and Education. Comparative Literature has two main specialisations: drama and general literary studies. Both of these include elements of creative Swedish that is linked to teaching. The subject offers courses at first and second-cycle (Bachelor’s and Master’s), as well as third-cycle studies (doctoral level) in the area of Critical and Cultural Theory. The subject examines research problems and themes associated with literary history and theoretical and thematic studies. The emphasis of education and research lies on the comparative analysis of literary texts (also drama) from the perspective of modern critical theory, including gender theory, postcolonial theory, animal studies, and media theory.For more information, seewww.sh.se/litteratur (Swedish version) or click here (English version).

The planned research for this studentship must be relevant for the Baltic Sea region or Eastern Europe, since the position is also connected to the Baltic and East European Graduate School, BEEGS (www.sh.se/beegs), which is part of theCentre for Baltic and East European Studies, CBEES (www.sh.se/cbees) at Södertörn University.
